“ The tradicional role of the Southern European countries as labour suppliers was decisevely inverted during the 1980s. Political turmoil, progressive instability, acute ethnic conflicts and lower standards os living in Eastern Europe, growing demographic pressure, increasing poverty, the search for economic betterment, religious struggles and war in Africa have greatly enhanced the attraction of Southern European countries both for economic migrants and refugees. At the ende of the 1980sm the existence within the borders of Italy , Greece, Spain and Portugal of close to 1,4 million migrants and of an estimated 1,3 to 1,5 irregular migrants, raised unprecendented legal, social and economic problems gthat these countries were unprepared to solve both at public and societal level. The novelty, urgency and broader political implications of immigration in Southern Europe spurred the interest of several social scientists but added value that comes from having a specific forum to exchange results, discuss idas, set reseach priority goals and international collaboration was missing. Contributors of this volume were asked to take into consideration some very specific questions, such as. Is the new immigration really different from the old? And if so why? Because the migrants involved are different? Because the migratory chains are different? Or / and because the international economic situation is different? Are social and political rights enjoyed by immigrants in Southern Europe weaker than in the old receiving areas? How are the new receiving societies, which until a few years ago were sending societies, reacting to immigration? What is the intensity of the trend of discrimination and xenophobic reactions? Is the settlement process of the new immigration faster^? Is the migrant turnover declining? What is the importance of the migration projects given the social, economic and political situation in the new receiving countries? “
